A #32Thursday x Members’ meet-up mashup as the Localworks team gives us a live demo of adding rammed earth layers to the sample wall! 👷🏾♀️🧱
Site engineer Geoffrey Addah gave a walkthrough and demonstration to our members, sharing details about the ratio of natural materials that are mixed for the rammed earth. We also got to watch as the earth mixture was evenly and rapidly compacted onto the wall. The tamping machine makes almost 1750 compressions per minute!
One of the many great qualities of rammed earth is its sustainability; the wall absorbs indoor air maintaining an even pleasant temperature, so there is no need for extra energy and cost spent on heating or cooling. It is made from the earth found on the site which cuts down on emissions from transportation. As this is the first rammed earth building in Kampala, we cherish the opportunity to share this experience with our community and beyond.
