Birungi Kawooya is an artist, art tutor and cultural producer inspired by nature, the beauty of Black womxn and the ingenuity of dance from the African diaspora using paper, paint, sculpture, natural fibres and batik indigenous to Uganda. Her works celebrate Black womxnhood, elevating rest, joy and wellbeing. She has used her work to research ways of being well in the community, inspired by nature, Black feminists and Afro somatic movement.
During her residency with 32° East, Kawooya used barkcloth and banana fibre to process, visualize, and release past trauma. She selected these materials because of their visual appeal and the metaphor of renewability these materials represent.
