Elly Arthur Niwatuhereza is a lecturer at Kyambogo University and, alongside a collective of students, recycles found objects into visual art to give them a second life and emphasize the importance of reducing waste.
In “Hands of Life” Elly Arthur Niwatuhereza transforms acrylic thread and t-shirt offcuts into imagery that speaks to the beauty and fragility of life in everyday situations. From women harvesting and celebrating in rural Uganda to a person threatened by breast cancer, Elly explores rich themes through touching images of the western countryside. Elly has been weaving non-biodegradable waste for several years and completed his residency at 32° East in 2016.
